Even today trees continue to serve man in so many ways. Trees provide man with fruits and building materials in the form of wood. Without trees it would be impossible to build houses, boats and even bridges. Furniture such as tables, chairs and beds is made of wood. In the tropics where it is very hot throughout the year, trees protect man from the terrible heat. They are also useful in preventing good and rich top soil from being washed away during heavy rains which are so common in the tropics. If there were no trees or vegetation of some kind to hold back the soil with their roots, heavy rain would wash away the rich surface soil that is so important and necessary to agriculture. The result is that the land becomes a desert. There are so many desert areas in the world. A long time ago these desert areas must have been very rich fertile areas, but since our ancestors in the distant past did not have enough knowledge about science of nature, they cut down all the trees in the areas where they lived and never planted new ones. By and by, the rich surface soil was blown away and washed away by strong winds and heavy rains. In the end the land was turned into useless deserts where nothing could grow. 31. According to the passage,______. A. ancient man did not know how to make use of trees B. trees are not as useful now as they were in the pas C. trees are more useful in the past than they are now D. men have always found trees very useful 32. According to the passage, some desert areas were once ______. A. fertile lands
B. covered by icebergs C. very cold
D. very dry and useless lands 33. If there were no trees,______. A. the land would become more fertile B. heavy rains would clean the tropics C. the rich top soil couldn’t be held back D. the balance of nature is unimportant to man 34. From this passage, we know that ______. A. man can do nothing to keep the balance of nature B. man may take no notice of the balance of nature C. man must do his best to keep the balance of nature D. the balance of nature is unimportant to man 35. The best title of this passage is ______. A. The Uses and Importance of Trees
B. The Importance of Top Soil C. How Are Rich Lands Turned into Deserts
D. Keep the Balance of Nature Passage 2
Among the most popular books being written today are those which are usually classified as science fiction. Hundreds of titles are published every year and are read by all kinds of people. Furthermore, some of the most successful films in recent years have been based on science fiction stories.
It is often thought that science fiction is a fairly new development in literature, but it can be found in books written hundreds of years ago. These books were often concerned with the presentation of some form of ideal society, a theme which is still often found in modern stories.
Most of the classics of science fiction, however, have been written within the last one hundred years. Books by writers such as Jules Verne and H.Wells, to mention just two well-known authors, have been translated into many languages. Modern science fiction writers don’t write about men from Mars or space adventure stories. They are more interested in predicting the results of technical developments on society and the human mind or in imagining future world which results the world we live in now. Because of this their writing has obvious political undertones. In an age where science fact frequently overtakes science fiction, the writers may find it difficult to keep ahead of scientific advances. Those who see the future clearly can teach us how to master new technology and live in a rapidly changing world. 36. Every year ______. A. many science fiction books are published B. many science fiction books are written C. a hundred science fiction books are published D. many books are classified as science fiction 37. You can find science fiction ______. A. only in modern literature B. only in books written for children C. in books written today and hundreds of years ago D. as a new development in literature 38. Most of the classics of science fiction have been written within ______. A. the last few hundred years
B. the last one hundred years C. the last two hundred years
D. the last three hundred years 39. Modern science fiction writers are interested in ______. A. writing about men from Mars B. writing about everything but politics C. imagining future world with the results of technical developments D. writing space adventure stories 40. Science fiction writers may provide a valuable lesson on how to deal with the problems of ______. A. conflict used by different political theories B. adopting new technology and adapting quickly to its effect on society C. conflict caused by different religious beliefs D. space adventure Ⅲ.用国际音标标出下列单词中划线字母或字母组合的读音。(每小题0.5分,共10分) 41. achieve
