it is human nature that all of us should be fond of beauty. everybody was born with a heart for beauty.

today in china,with the rising of our living standard, people"s requirement of beauty has been heightened accordingly. some people spare no money or energy on beautiful clothes, fashionable hair styles,the decoration of their houses and even the improvement of their looks. but it seems to me,all

these are more or less confined to the beauty in appearance,or rather,the outward beauty.

in my opinion,we shouldn"t only pay attention to beautiful appearance and neglect the beautification of the mind and what we are after should be the perfect unity of the outward beauty and the inner beauty. as we all know,so far as objects and animals are concerned,there is only beautiful appearance to be mentioned, but to us humanbeings, although the outward beauty really matters, the inner beauty is much more important. this was confirmed by a famous russian writer in words much like this: "a person is

not lovely for being beautiful but beautiful for being lovely. "

here, i"d like to quote two typical instances and i"m sure, my dear friends,from them you"ll find out what real beauty is.

recently i learned from the radio an unpleasant incident about a well known singer. she is very charming with a sweet beautiful voice and very famous for singing the song."devotion of love". not long ago,she was invited to zhejiang province to give performance. the moment she was to appear on the stage,she suddenly asked for more reward. worse still,after her request was satisfied, she didn"t begin to sing at once. instead,she took her time to count all the money piece by piece. thus she kept the audience waiting for half an hour. so when she at last showed up and started to sing "devotion of love",a man rose up from his seat and shouted at her,"you don"t have any devotion of love. you are not qualified to sing this song ! "hearing this, the singer stopped singing and began to shout abuses with her finger pointed at the man. at this time the whole audience burst into an uproar.

how disappointed her keen listeners were when they learned this! it is the singer herself who spoiled her beautiful image in the eyes of others.

now, i"m coming to another true story. it"s about a poor, ordinary looking old woman. she was a widow without any children, living barely from hand to mouth by picking odds and ends from rubbish heaps. however,she took in more than ten homeless orphans successively and managed to bring them up. every day she labored from morning till night. in order to earn as much money as possible to raise the children and to keep them in school,she even went to a hospital regularly to sell her blood. she got so weak for the loss of blood that she sometimes fell in a faint on her way home.

responsibility is a badge of honour for youth

facing this audience on the stage, i have the exciting feeling of participating in the march of history, for what we are facing today is more than a mere competition or contest. it is an assembly of some of china"s most talented and motivated people, representatives of a younger generation that are preparing themselves for the coming of a new century.

i"m grateful that i"ve been given this opportunity, at such a historic moment, to stand here as a spokesman of my generation and to take a serious look back at the past 15 years, a crucial period for every one of us and for this nation as well.

though it is only within my power to tell about my personal experience, and only a tiny fragment of it at that, it still represents, i believe, the root of a spirit which has been essential to me and to all the people bred by the past 15 years.

in my elementary years, there was a little girl in the class who worked very hard but somehow could never do satisfactorily in her lessons.

the teacher asked me to help her, and it was obvious that she expected a lot from me. but as a young boy, restless, thoughtless, i always tried to evade her so as to get more time to enjoy myself.

one day before the final exam, she came up to me and said, "could you please explain this to me? i want very much to do better this time. " i started explaining, and finished in a hurry. pretending not to notice her still confused eyes, i ran off quickly. nat surprisingly, she again did very badly in the exam. and two months later, at the beginning of the new semester, word came of her death of blood cancer. no one ever knew about the little task i failed to fulfill, but i couldn"t forgive myself. i simply couldn"t forget her eyes, which seem to be asking, "why didn"t you do a little more to help me, when it was so easy for you? why didn"t you understand a little better the trust placed in you, so that i would not have to leave this world in such pain and regret?"

i was about eight or nine years old at that time, but in a way it was the very starting point of my life, for i began to understand the word "responsibility" and to learn to always do my duties faithfully and devotedly, for the implications of that sacred word has dawned on me: the mutual need and trust of people, the co-operation and inter-reliance which are the very foundation of human society.

later in my life, i continued to experience many failures. but never again did i feel that regret which struck me at the death of the girl, for it makes my heart satisfied to think that i have always done everything in my power to fulfill my responsibilities as best i can.

as i grew up, changed and improved by this incident and many other similar ones, i began to perceive the changes taking place around me and to find that society, in a way, was in its formative years like myself. new buildings, new commodities and new fashions appear every day.

new ideas, new information, new technologies. people can talk with each other from any corner of the earth in a matter of seconds. society is becoming more competitive.

words like individuality and creativity are getting more emphasis and more people are rewarded for their hard work and efforts. such is the era in which this generation ,grows and matures.

such is the era in which this generation will take over the nation from our fathers and learn to run it. yet in the meantime, many problems still exist.

we learn that crimes take place in broad daylight with crowds of people looking on and not assisting. we hear that there are still about 1 million children in this country who can"t even afford to go to elementary schools while enormous sums of money are being squandered away on dinner parties and luxury cars.

we buy shoddy medicines, or merely worthless junk in the name of medicines, that aggravate, rather than alleviate our diseases since money, many people believe, is the most important thing in the world that must be made, even at the expense of morality and responsibility.

such an era, therefore, determines that we are a generation with a keener sense of competition and efficiency and a greater readiness to think critically and act creatively.

such an era, furthermore, demands, that we are a generation with a clear perception of our historical responsibility and an aggressive will to take action and solve the problems. history has long been preparing these qualities in this generation and it is now calling us forward to give testimony to our patriotism and heroism towards this nation and all humanity.

standing here now, i think of the past 15 years of my life as an ordinary student. probably i"ll be an ordinary man for the rest of my life. but this doesn"t discourage me any, for i know that with my sense of responsibility and devoted efforts to always strive, for the best, it"s going to be a meaningful and worthwhile life that i will be living.

standing here now, i think of the past 15 years of this nation, which has achieved greatness that inspired millions of people of my age, most of whom will not attain fame or prestige and only a few of whom will be remembered by posterity. but that doesn"t discourage us any, because we know that the world watches, the world listens, the world is waiting to see where this nation will be heading in a time of rich opportunities and fierce competition.

i can"t ever forget that little girl in my class who couldn"t had the same opportunities as any of us here to enjoy a wonderful life today and a hopeful world tomorrow.

it is the sacred responsibility of this generation to face up to the challenges of the new century and to devote our sweat and blood, our wisdom and passion, to the historic cause of making this nation a greater and happier land for every one of us.

we are not going to evade that responsibility. we are going to let people down. and people, far and near, will hear of us. frost will be brought to their backbones and tears to their eyes when our stories are told and retold, so let us go forth, my fellow members of this luckily chosen generation, and meet the new century in victory and glory.

knowing the consequences of choice

over the past spring festival, i got involved in a family dispute. right before i got home, four satellite channels of cctv were added to the 14 channels we had already had. in prime time at night, they all had interesting shows. therefore, the five of us-my parents, my sisters and i-had to argue over what to watch. finally, we agreed that we should watch the "most interesting" programme... if we

could agree what that was.

however, all of us there remember that for a long time after we had tv, there were only one or two channels available. the increase in options reveals an important change in our life: the abundance of choice.

fifteen years ago we all dressed in one style and in one colour. today, we select from a wide variety of designs and shades.

i regain confidence

i received a devastating blow to my self-confidence in the first interview of my college years. i applied to be a host in our student acting troupe and felt confident that i would be accepted. but one of the panel members told me: "you seem inadequate and you are a little vertically-challenged." my life has never been the same since. i used bigger heels to complement my height and psychological maneuvers and tricks to hide my lack of confidence. but no matter how hard i tried to look the part, there was still something missing.

as president of english club, i organized the rehearsal of snow white for an english party. unfortunately, we could not find an actor to be the last dwarf. it had to be someone who was humorous by nature and fluent in english. suddenly, all eyes turned to me, and i knew i would have to be the dwarf. to my great surprise and delight, once on stage, i was totally absorbed in the performance and my humorous nature was put to full use. as the dwarf, i was a big hit.

yes, each of us is only one among millions of others, but each of us is an individual and each of us is unique. cultivating our individuality will transform our lives, making of them a kaleidoscope of new colors and textures.

a world deprived of diversity would be a bland and boring place. the real tragedy is not being short or shy or ugly, but having your identity lost in a world in which everyone is a clone of a model cool boy or a flawless charming girl.

given a choice, i would rather be ugly than live in such a world. i"d rather be a genuine dwarf accompanying a snow white than be a snow white among nothing but snow whites. i would rather be myself. i would contribute my individual and unique colors to create a more diverse universe. please, be yourself.

first let me introduce myself. my name is lishuai, and my english name is jacky lee. i"ve finished my undergraduate education in xidian university, majoring in electronic science and technology in the college of technical physics.

although i have broad interests in many aspects and grasp the essential knowledge of the major, but i think at present, i can do many things in a superficial level, but not be competent to do things professionally owing to lack of ample knowledge and ability. so i think further study is still urgent for me to realize self-value.

the major that i hope pursue for my further education is ic design. because i find integrated circuits are playing a more and more important role in our modern society. and nowadays in china, with the recognition by the government, our domestic integrated circuits industry is growing rapidly and that may provide a lot of chances to us.

i plan to concentrate on study and research in this field in my graduate time. and i hope i can form a systematic view of micro electronics and ic design technology and make a solid foundation for future profession after three years study here.

第一部分：考查学生理解并回答有关日常生活、家庭、工作、学习等问题的能力（3分钟）。第二部分：考查学生连续表达的能力。考生从所给你的问题中选择一个话题，就此话题表达自己的看法（3分钟）。

一、 第一句话（first word）。见到考官的第一句话，很关键，不用说的很复杂。可以是一个简单句，但一定要铿锵有力。

展示出自信和实力。千万不要来一句“sorry, my english is poor”。常见的开头有：

二、作自我介绍——成长经历（making a self-introduction ——developing

history）。有很多学校要求做一个自我介绍，这一问题并非在请你大谈你的个人历史。考官是要在你的介绍中寻找有关你性格、资历、志向和生活动力的线索。

另外在介绍性格和爱好的时候，适合把家庭介绍结合在一起，可以说父母给了你哪些方面良好的影响。不要流水帐似的介绍家庭成员。可以这么说：在这里给出描述个人品质常用词汇的中英文对照，可以参考。

三、若考官问其他的，没有听明白，可以说"could you speak slowly ?"or"sorry,i didn`t prepare for this question"相信英语(论坛)口语菜的人大有人在，豁出去了保持微笑：i am sorry! i beg your pardon? i don"t understand your question,could you repeat it again?sorry, i don"t know. (i am little acquainted with the aspect of special knowledge)but i wish i can have a chance to learn more deeply the knowledge under your direction 。

四、常见问题

注意在准备的过程中，要结合自己的经历和见解来准备答案，让自己回答的问题和整个的自我介绍融为一个整体。要不然很容易被考官抓住把柄，问个没完，很容易因紧张而露出马脚。在每一年的面试中都会有很多相同的问题，这些问题看起来很平常，却有很多陷阱，一不小心就会被考官抓主小辫子了。回答这些常见的看起来很平常的问题，是很有艺术的。

1、"what can you tell me about yourself?" （"关于你自己，你能告诉我些什么？"）

this is not an invitation to give your life history. the interviewer is looking for clues about your character, qualifications, ambitions, and motivations.不完全等同于自我介绍，选一部分。

2、"what would you like to be doing five years after graduation?"

if possible, i will go on with my study for doctorate degree. after graduating received doctorate degree, i wanted to teach in university, and continue research in archaian(古代的) literature field,i hope i can have some achievement in my major.

3. "what is your greatest strength"?" （"你最突出的优点是什么？"）这是你"展示自己"的最佳机会，不要吹嘘自己或过于自负，但要让雇主知道你相信自己，你知道自己的优点。

maybe because i am young people, i am a short fuse girl in daily life, fortunately i have realized it was disadvantage, and i am trying my best to get rid of it.

"i think i did well in school. but i am clear that i still have a long way to walk to realize my dream and finally achieve self-value. i will try my best.

i will try my best to accomplish my plan as soon as i make a good choose, and i am not distracted by circumstance and i never give up my choose, such as this postgraduate exams.

today i"m very happy to be here to share with you some of my thoughts on the topic of globalization. and first of all, i would like to mention an event in our recent history.

thirty years ago, american president richard nixon made an epoch-making visit to china, a country still isolated at that time. premier zhou enlai said to him, "your handshake came over the vastest ocean in the world - twenty-five years of no communication." ever since then, china and america have exchanged many handshakes of various kinds. the fundamental implication of this example is that the need and desire to communicate across differences in culture and ideology is not only felt by the two countries but by many other nations as well.

as we can see today, environmentalists from different countries are making joint efforts to address the issue of global warming, economists are seeking solutions to financial crises that rage in a particular region but nonetheless cripple the world"s economy, and diplomats and politicians are getting together to discuss the issue of combating terrorism. peace and prosperity has become a common goal that we are striving for all over the world. underlying this mighty trend of globalization is the echo of e. m. forster"s words, "only connect!"

with the it revolution taking place, traditional boundaries of human society fall away. our culture, politics, society and commerce are being sloshed into a large melting pot of humanity. in this interlinked world, there are no outsiders, for a disturbance in one place is likely to impact other parts of the globe. we have begun to realize that a world divided cannot endure.

china is now actively integrating into the world. our recent entry to the wto is a good example. for decades, we have taken pride in being self-reliant, but now we realize the importance of participating in and contributing to a broader economic order. from the precarious role in the world arena to our present wto membership, we have come a long way.

but what does the way ahead look like? in some parts of the world people are demonstrating against globalization. are they justified then, in criticizing the globalizing world? instead of narrowing the gap between the rich and the poor, they say, globalization enables developed nations to swallow the developing nations" wealth in debts and interest. globalization, they argue, should be about an earnest interest in every other nation"s economic health.

we are reminded by karl marx that capital goes beyond national borders and eludes control from any other entity. this has become a reality. multinational corporations are seeking the lowest cost, the largest market, and the most favorable policy. they are often powerful lobbyists in government decision-making, ruthless expansionists in the global market place and a devastating presence to local businesses.

for china, still more challenges exist. how are we going to ensure a smooth transition from the planned economy to a market-based one? how to construct a legal system that is sound enough and broad enough to respond to the needs of a dynamic society? how to maintain our cultural identity in an increasingly homogeneous world? and how to define greatness in our rise as a peace-loving nation? globalization entails questions that concern us all.

like many young people my age in china, i want to see my country get prosperous and enjoying respect in the international community. but it seems to me that mere patriotism is not just enough. it is vitally important that we young people do more serious thinking and broaden our mind to bigger issues. and, there might never be easy answers to those issues such as globalization, but to take them on and give them honest thinking is the first step to be prepared for both opportunities and challenges coming our way. and this is also one of the thoughts that came to me while preparing this speech. thank you.

man’s life is a process of growing up, actually i’m standing here is a growth. if a person’s life must constituted by various choices, then i grow up along with these choices. once i hope i can study in a college in future, however that’s passed, as you know i come here, now i wonder what the future holds for (= what will happen to) me. 

when i come to this school, i told to myself: this my near future, all starts here. following i will learn to become a man, a integrated man, who has a fine body, can take on important task, has independent thought, an open mind, intensive thought, has the ability to judge right and wrong, has a perfect job. 

once my teacher said :” you are not sewing, you are stylist; never forget which you should lay out to people is your thought, not craft.” i will put my personality with my interest and ability into my study, during these process i will combine learning with doing. if i can achieve this “future”, i think that i really grow up. and i deeply believe kindred, good-fellowship and love will perfection and happy in the future. 

how to say future? maybe it’s a nice wish. lets make up our minds, stick to it and surely well enjoy our life.
